Mayor's Recap: March 12th BOC Work Session and Meeting

On Tuesday, March 12, 2019, the Waxhaw Board of Commissioners conducted both a work session and a regularly scheduled business meeting.

The work session was focused on the recently released draft of the Parks and Recreation Strategic Master Plan. Each town Board member provided for discussion their individual detailed input on the entire plan. Over the next several weeks this plan will continue to go through a rigorous review process by the Board of Commissioners, the Parks and Recreation Advisory Board, and the public before final adoption by the town.

The regular meeting saw the following actions by the Board of Commissioners:

  • Approved a number of administrative items. Included was a budget amendment to allocate monies for construction of additional parking in the Downtown area.
  • Received the quarterly report from the Waxhaw Entrepreneurs (WE). WE  champions the Town of Waxhaw’s vision and mission through small business development. Since 2012 the WE has incubated over 75 businesses in Waxhaw.
  • Joined many of the communities in the Charlotte region by adopting a proclamation declaring March 15, 2019 as Caroline "CC" Casey Day in the Town of Waxhaw. CC is a terminally ill child who was diagnosed with a rare disorder, for which there is no cure.
  • Adopted modifications to the YMCA Waxhaw agreement. These amendments create momentum for the project to move forward. The first Waxhaw YMCA Advisory Board will be in place by July 1. The concept plans for the entire complex will be created and approved within the next 17 months. Work on the soccer fields will begin later this year.
  • Discussed State Law changes being considered to how ABC Boards operate. This could have significant revenue and services impact on Waxhaw. The Board agreed to discuss and adopt an appropriate resolution outlining our concerns at the March 26 meeting.

We close each meeting with comments from the Board. I chose to focus my comments on what has become my favorite week of the year – Sunshine Week – which encourages open government. Our Board and Staff focus on transparency has led to nearly complete modernization and openness to how we govern.

This has been led by our Communications team, and our reach has expanded to every corner of Waxhaw. We take stewardship and integrity very seriously. And while we have made giant leaps, we are always open to suggestions for improvement. We welcome and ask everyone to become a participant in Waxhaw Life and share your ideas with the Communications team.

Thank you to those that attended in person and to those that view via our Town YouTube Channel (another open government improvement by our team!)  If you have any additional questions about our recent meetings please contact communications@waxhaw.com.
