SPECIAL STATEMENT

Autumn Treasures/Grill’n & Chill’n BBQ Cook-off October 9-11, 2020 Postponed to October 8-10, 2021

When the COVID-19 lockdown began in March, none of us would have believed that we would still be looking at a shutdown in August.  We all hoped our state’s numbers would turn around and we could find a way to hold events to give everyone something to look forward to. 

Our staff has struggled to find solutions. We’ve discussed how we could limit capacity. We’ve discussed how we could successfully sanitize and maintain socially-distant vendor booths, food booths, amusement rides, food tables and port-potties, etc.  We’ve discussed if there was any way we could salvage parts of Autumn Treasures/Grill’n & Chill’n that could follow guidelines and still go on.  However, with the mass gathering outdoors limit still holding at 25 in NC, and indoors at 10, which includes festivals, parades and events, it is feasibly impossible to hold a large-scale event at this time.  Even if that amount was raised to 250 (hypothetically), the complexity would be extremely difficult for our small staff of 8 to manage. 

The Town ultimately determined that cancelling the 2020 Autumn Treasures/Grill’n & Chill’n BBQ Cook-off scheduled for October 9-11, 2020 is the correct action for the health and safety of our community and to mitigate the potential spread of COVID-19 in our community.  We are sad, but we look forward to seeing you all next year, (October 8-10, 2021) in downtown Waxhaw! 

All vendors, concessionaires, sponsors and BBQ Teams previously registered will be receiving refunds shortly.  If you submitted payment more than 90 days ago, your refund will be issued via check.  If shorter than 90 days, then the refund will be issued back to the credit card used when you registered.

About the Festival


Your mouth will water from the sweet smell of barbecue cooking on the grills of professional and backyard barbecue teams during the Grill’n & Chill’n BBQ Cook-off held in October as part of the Autumn Treasures Festival. Sanctioned by the Kansas City Barbeque Society, up to 30 professional teams will compete for prize money and championship titles.

It’s a little piece of hog heaven, so come join us for Grill’n & Chill’n in October!

About the Competition


The Pro teams will arrive on Friday and cook all night. On Saturday from 11 am - 1 pm, the teams turn in their meats to be judged by a professional line-up of KCBS certified judges.  Professional teams are judged in four categories: chicken, pork ribs, pork shoulder / butt, and beef brisket.  On Saturday afternoon from 1:30 - 4:00 pm, the public will get a chance to taste this awesomeness and vote on their favorite during the public tasting event. All ticket sales from this event help local charities. Winners are announced Saturday at 5 PM.
