Mayor's Recap: April 9th BOC Work Session and Meeting

On Tuesday, April 9th, 2019, the Waxhaw Board of Commissioners conducted both a work session and a regularly scheduled business meeting.

The work session was focused on preparation for the FY 2020 budget process and included:

  • A detailed discussion on potential capital improvement projects and the town’s financial capacity to support them,
  • An update from Parks and Recreation on the status of their evolving programming plans,
  • A discussion, led by our Community Policing group, on a new and innovative approach to registration of pets to ensure the safety and well-being of both our citizens and their pets.

The regular meeting began with the Board of Commissioners:

  • Approving a number of administrative items,
  • Welcoming our new Fire Marshal, Kevin Starnes,
  • Recognizing Amy Merrill, Parks and Recreation, for 5 years of Service with the Town of Waxhaw.

The remainder of the meeting centered on the presentation of the results of Waxhaw’s FY18 (last year) audit, by our Auditor, Greene Finney, LLC. The highlights included:

  • An increase of $600K to our General Fund (savings account);
  • A General Fund (savings account) balance of over $4.6M representing over 48% of our actual annual expenditure [FY18];
  • A review of all of our total assets
  • A review of our current debt status
  • A positive assessment of our financial controls
  • An unmodified opinion of Waxhaw’s financial statements. An unmodified opinion provides the highest level of assurance that the auditor’s professional, independent examination of financial statements has not revealed any actual or possible material misstatements in our financial statements.

At the conclusion of the auditor presentation the Board of Commissioners officially accepted the financial statements as presented.

Thank you to those that attended in person and to those that view via our town YouTube Channel.   If you have any additional questions about our recent meetings, please contact communications@waxhaw.com.
