Waxhaw Celebrates July as Independent Retailer Month

Downtown Waxhaw to Host Special Shopping Weekend July 11-13

Post Date:07/02/2025 5:00 p.m.

The Town of Waxhaw is celebrating July as Independent Retailer Month, recognizing the essential contributions of locally owned independent retailers to Waxhaw’s economy and encouraging residents to shop locally.

The Town of Waxhaw Board of Commissioners issued a proclamation in support of Independent Retailer Month during its June 24 meeting.

“Independently owned retailers give back to our communities in goods, services, time and talent,” Mayor Robert Murray said. “The health of our economy and that of each community depends on support of businesses owned by our friends and neighbors.”

As part of the celebration, Downtown Waxhaw will host a special shopping weekend on July 11-13 with shops staying open late on Friday during the Town of Waxhaw’s “Jammin’ by the Tracks” event at the Community Corner. Visitors can also expect many downtown businesses to have special sales and activities throughout the weekend to encourage local shopping.

“With more than 120 small businesses located in Downtown Waxhaw, this month will showcase what makes our downtown district unique and special,” Waxhaw’s Business Development Director Ashley Nowell said. “Supporting independent, locally owned retailers creates a ripple effect that enhances the local economy, job growth, and our community character. It’s a win-win for businesses and shoppers.”

Independent Retailer Month, or “Indie Retailer Month”, reminds us why local businesses matter: small businesses foster a sense of identity, promote entrepreneurship, and contribute to the economy by creating jobs and keeping money circulating in the community. An average of $0.68 of every dollar spent at a locally owned business is re-invested locally.
