At its July 22 meeting, the Waxhaw Board of Commissioners passed a proclamation recognizing July 26, 2025, as Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) Pride Day in honor of the landmark law’s 35th anniversary.
Signed into law on July 26, 1990, by President George H.W. Bush, the ADA is one of the most significant civil rights laws in U.S. history. It prohibits discrimination against individuals with disabilities and ensures equal access to employment, government services, public spaces, transportation, and commercial facilities.
Over the past 35 years, the ADA has transformed communities nationwide by breaking down barriers, reshaping public spaces, and advancing the rights and opportunities of millions of Americans.
In the proclamation, the Town of Waxhaw reaffirmed its commitment to accessibility, equity, and inclusion. The Board recognized the resilience and contributions of people with disabilities and praised local organizations, businesses, and community leaders who work to create an environment where all residents can thrive.
Mayor Robert J. Murray III encouraged all residents to reflect on the progress made since the ADA’s passage and to continue striving toward a fully inclusive community.
