The Town of Waxhaw has been awarded two safety grants from the North Carolina League of Municipalities (NCLM), providing new funding to strengthen pedestrian safety in the heart of downtown.
Grant Awards:
- Workers’ Compensation (WC) Safety Grant – $2,648.30
- Property & Liability (PL) Safety Grant – $5,000
- Total Funding Awarded – $7,648.30
These grant funds will support the purchase and installation of six retractable bollards across North Providence Street, just before it intersects East North Main Street, creating a safer pedestrian zone during special events, festivals, and other high-traffic times. The lift-assist design allows staff to quickly raise the bollards when the street is closed and lower them when normal traffic resumes.
In addition, the Town will install two permanent bollards on the sidewalk plazas at East North Main Street and NC-16. These bollards are designed to complement the character of Waxhaw’s historic downtown while providing a strong physical barrier to protect pedestrians in this heavily traveled area.
“Investing in long-term safety improvements is essential for both our residents and the thousands of visitors who enjoy our downtown events each year,” said Town Manager Scott Dadson. “This also moves the Town closer to a system that is safer, more efficient, and cost-effective.”
The Waxhaw Board of Commissioners adopted a resolution endorsing the Town’s application for the 2025 NCLM Safety Grant Program and authorizing a $10,000 local match for the purchase and installation of bollards at its regular meeting on Nov. 10.
The Town will move forward with purchasing and installing the bollards. Follow the Town of Waxhaw on social media for updates as the work progresses.
