Prepare Now for the Winter Storm

Post Date:01/21/2026 4:34 p.m.

A significant winter storm is expected to impact our region Saturday into Sunday. While exact timing and amounts remain fluid, forecasters warn this storm could bring a combination of snow, sleet, freezing rain, and cold temperatures. Hazardous travel, slick roads, and the potential for service disruptions are possible.

The Town of Waxhaw is actively monitoring conditions and will provide regular updates on a dedicated webpage waxhaw.com/storm, through our social media channels, and via the Waxhaw Connect app.

What Residents Should Do Before the Storm

Winter storms can be unpredictable. Preparing early helps protect your household and reduces risks:

  • Know the Forecast & Alerts. Sign up for UC Alerts to receive timely updates.
  • Build or Restock Essentials
  • Have enough food and water for at least 3 days.
  • Include medications, pet supplies, and warm clothing.
  • Keep batteries, flashlights, and a battery-powered radio on hand.

Winterize Your Home

  • Insulate pipes and let faucets drip slightly during freezing weather to help prevent pipe freezing.
  • Close gaps around doors and windows; add weather stripping if needed.
  • Never use a charcoal grill, camp stove, or generator indoors. Carbon monoxide poisoning is a serious risk and could cause death.

Plan for Power Outages

  • Keep mobile devices charged.
  • Have a safe, outdoor space for generator use if needed.
  • Consider extra blankets and warm layers should heat be limited.
  • Report outages to your power provider. The Town of Waxhaw does not provide power.

Travel Only If Necessary

  • Roads can become slick quickly, especially bridges and overpasses. If travel is absolutely needed, drive slowly and allow extra stopping time.
  • If possible, plan to stay off the roads when winter precipitation begins.
