Town of Waxhaw Prepares for More Winter Weather

Post Date:01/30/2026 8:45 a.m.

The Town of Waxhaw is preparing for another round of winter weather expected to impact the area this weekend. While this system is not anticipated to be as severe as the recent ice storm, hazardous travel conditions and freezing temperatures remain a concern.

The Town of Waxhaw is actively monitoring conditions and will provide regular updates on a dedicated webpage waxhaw.com/storm, through our social media channels, and via the Waxhaw Connect app.

What Residents Should Do Now

Residents are encouraged to take steps now to prepare and reduce the need to travel once winter weather begins:

  • Complete errands and gather essential supplies ahead of time
  • Plan to stay off the roads during the storm, especially during periods of snow and freezing conditions
  • Prepare for the possibility of isolated power outages. Report outages to your power provider: Duke Energy or Union Power. The Town of Waxhaw does not provide power.
  • Check on neighbors, family members, and pets, especially those who may need assistance

Winterize Your Home

  • Insulate pipes and let faucets drip slightly during freezing weather to help prevent pipe freezing.
  • Close gaps around doors and windows; add weather stripping if needed.
  • Never use a charcoal grill, camp stove, or generator indoors. Carbon monoxide poisoning is a serious risk and could cause death.

Travel Safety Is a Priority

Travel during winter weather poses the greatest risk. Snow, ice, and strong winds can quickly make roads unsafe. Residents are strongly encouraged to avoid unnecessary travel and use extreme caution if travel cannot be avoided.

Temperatures are expected to remain below freezing throughout the weekend, increasing the potential for icy roads and walkways even after snowfall ends.

Town Operations & Response

The Town of Waxhaw remains under a local State of Emergency, which allows the Town to respond quickly and coordinate resources as conditions change.

Following the recent ice storm, salt supplies remain limited nationwide. The Town is working with distributors to secure additional materials; however, availability remains constrained. Public Services crews will prioritize critical areas and immediate safety concerns.

Roads & Thoroughfares

  • Our main thoroughfares, NC-75, NC-16, and Waxhaw-Marvin Road are maintained by NCDOT. Residents should check real-time road conditions at DriveNC.gov.

Public Services Operations

  • Our Public Services team will pre-treat and spread salt on sidewalks around Downtown Waxhaw, the Police Department, and Town Hall.
  • Public Services crews will be on call throughout the storm to respond to urgent issues.

Parks, Trails, and Programs

  • Parks and Trails may close as conditions warrant to keep visitors safe. We do not have exact closure times yet, but updates will be posted as soon as they are available.

Town Services & Facilities

Operational decisions, including any impacts to Town services or facilities, will be communicated as conditions develop. Updates regarding Town operations and schedules will be shared through official Town communication channels.
