The Waxhaw Skate Park (WXW SK8) will temporarily close starting Thursday, June 18, 2026, as the Town of Waxhaw begins a planned crack repair project to provide smoother and safer surface for our skaters. The project is expected to be completed by Friday, June 26, weather permitting.
What is being repaired?
The skate park has experienced concrete deterioration over time, including cracks across the park surface, water infiltration accelerating that deterioration, and separation at metal interfaces. To address these safety and rideability concerns, contractor Durafy will repair 1,571 linear feet of cracks throughout the park. Each crack will be hand-ground, routed, cleaned, and sealed with a premium flexible polyurea filler designed to bond directly to the concrete surface. This means skaters will experience smooth surfaces at the Sk8 Park once again.
What is closed?
During construction, the following areas will be closed to the public:
- Waxhaw Skate Park (WXW SK8)
- The skate park parking lot (accessed from Caldwell Street)
- Sidewalks leading into the skate park site
What remains open?
- David G. Barnes Park and restrooms — open 8 a.m. to 8 p.m.
- The pump track at Downtown Park and surrounding area — open 8 a.m. to 8 p.m.
- Parking for David G. Barnes Park is available from the West S. Main Street / NC-75 entrance
- The sidewalk along S. Church Street remains open
How do I get to David G. Barnes Park during construction?
Use the main David G. Barnes Park entrance off West S. Main Street / NC-75. That entrance provides access to parking, David G. Barnes Park, and restrooms. Do not attempt to enter from the Caldwell Street side — that area is reserved for construction crews only.
What about dust and noise near neighbors?
The Town will place recycled screening along the rear neighbor boundary and the S. Church Street parking area to help minimize dust impact during construction.
Looking ahead
This repair project is part of the Town's broader commitment to the skate park community. The Town has also engaged Pillar Design Studios to develop a long-term Skate Park Action Plan, which will include public engagement, site analysis, and a full conceptual redesign. That process begins in mid-June and runs through early October 2026.
