Starting Tuesday, September 1, an off-duty Waxhaw Police officer will begin directing traffic at the intersection of Rehobeth Road and W. S. Main St./NC-75 during peak travel times.

This marks a key milestone in the Town's ongoing work with Pulte Homes to improve safety and traffic flow at the intersection during the development of The Preserve at Forest Creek subdivision.

What's Happening

Pulte Homes has met all requirements the Town set for the first phase of intersection improvements tied to its Preserve development. That includes:

• Securing a $2 million bond to fund the required traffic signalization, rail crossing, and lane improvements at the intersection of Rehobeth Road and NC-75
• Arranging for a contracted, off-duty Waxhaw Police officer to direct traffic at the intersection during peak hours, beginning September 1
• Working with the Town Attorney and Development Services staff to finalize agreements with the North Carolina Department of Transportation (NCDOT) and CSX for the signal and rail crossing work

With these conditions satisfied, the Town has cleared Pulte to begin receiving Certificates of Occupancy, the final approval needed before a completed home can be occupied, allowing up to three finished homes per month at the Preserve to welcome new residents starting September 1. 

Traffic Impacts

Residents and drivers who use Rehobeth Road and W. Main St./NC-75 should expect:

• An off-duty officer directing traffic Monday through Friday, approximately 6:30 to 9 a.m. and 3:30 to 6 p.m.
• Officer-directed traffic during any special events at the intersection

This arrangement will remain in place until the permanent traffic signal is installed.

What's Changing at the Intersection

Once complete, the intersection will have a new traffic signal at Rehobeth Road and W. S. Main St./NC-75, along with updated pavement markings and turn lanes to improve traffic flow across the rail crossing.

The all-way stop currently at W. N. Main St. and Rehobeth Road will become a two-way stop. Drivers turning from Rehobeth Road onto W. N. Main St./Waxhaw-Marvin Road will have the right-of-way and will no longer stop.

Why This Matters

The intersection improvements are designed to address traffic safety concerns as the Preserve development grows. Rather than allowing occupancy to move forward without safeguards, the Town negotiated a phased approach that ties new home occupancy directly to Pulte's progress on the infrastructure improvements the intersection needs.

If Pulte submits executed agreements with NCDOT before December 1, the monthly release of Certificates of Occupancy will continue through August 2027. Should the intersection improvements be completed ahead of that timeline, the remaining Certificates of Occupancy will be released without the monthly cap.
