Waxhaw's First Wall Mural!
The Town's first mural is located at 122 W. North Main St. on the Great Wagon Road Building. This stunning mural captures the essence of our community and its rich heritage.
This mural was installed during our annual Kaleidoscope Festival in May 2024. Witnesses were able to see the creation of this beautiful mural as it came to life right before their eyes!
Artists: Swych & Carla Garrison-Mattos
Bio:
Swych and Carla met in 2021 via Instagram over their shared love of art and a mutual respect for each other’s artistic style. They became fast friends and have supported one another in their individual mural projects, but always had a desire to collaborate on a project together. In January 2024 the opportunity arose to work together on a couple of large-scale mural projects for Dodd Creative Group. As expected, they made a great partnership and decided to apply for the Waxhaw Call to Artists as a team. Swych, with a BFA in graphic design, has a vibrant graffiti/pop art style of design creating original characters and fonts as a skilled spray paint artist. Carla’s style leans more towards a painterly realism with a pop art inspiration, utilizing a mixture of spray paint and hand painted elements to create her murals. Together they will merge their unique artistic perspectives and collective 15 years of mural painting experience to celebrate Waxhaw’s past, present and future in a colorful and welcoming design that will be a perfect photo op destination for visitors and residents alike.
“Days of old, Days of new”
The mural aims to stir nostalgia for Waxhaw's iconic historic trains and to capture the memories of children who gather to watch them pass.
