Winter Storm: January - February 2026

The Town of Waxhaw is actively monitoring an approaching winter storm expected to impact the area this weekend. This page will serve as the primary source for official Town updates as conditions change and information becomes available.

Updates will be posted here regularly and may include changes to Town operations, public safety information, and impacts to services or facilities. Residents are encouraged to check this page often for the latest information.

Key updates will also be shared through the Town’s social media channels and the Waxhaw Connect app.

Storm Updates

Tuesday, February 3, 2026

5 p.m. - Town Operations Update:

  • Town of Waxhaw offices will return to normal operating hours Wednesday, Feb. 4. Thank you for your patience. 

Monday, February 2, 2026

5 p.m. - Town Operations Update: 

  • Town of Waxhaw offices will open at 1 p.m. Tuesday, February 3, 2026, due to the inclement road conditions. 

Trash & Recycling Update:  

  • Waste Pro will operate on a 3-hour delayed start on Tuesday, February 3.
  • Monday and Tuesday customers: Both routes will be collected on Tuesday, Feb. 3. Please place your carts at the curb by 9 a.m. Tuesday and leave them out until serviced, as crews may work later than usual.
  • Collection will only occur on roads deemed safe for heavy equipment. If your street remains icy, service could be further delayed.
  • The remainder of the week will operate on a normal schedule. Wednesday, Thursday, and Friday customers should place carts at the curb on their regular collection day.

Parks, Trails, & Facilities Update:

  • The following will OPEN at 1 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 3:
    • Town Creek Park & trail head
    • David G. Barnes Park 
    • 12-Mile Creek Greenway at Town Creek Park into Prescot
    • Recreation Barn (closes at 5 p.m.) 
    • Meeting Place (closes at 5 p.m)
  • The follow are CLOSED Tuesday, Feb. 3:
    • Downtown Park
    • Sk8 Park
    • H.C. Nesbit Park
    • 12-Mile Creek Natural Trail NC/SC Suspension Bridge

Sunday, February 1, 2026 

5:30 p.m. - Trash & Recycling Update: 

  •  There will be no trash or recycling service on Monday due to winter weather conditions.
  • The Town is coordinating with Waste Pro to determine an updated collection schedule. We will share details about any delays or revised service days as soon as they are confirmed. 

2 p.m. -  All Town of Waxhaw offices and facilities will be closed Monday, Feb. 2, 2026, due to the winter storm. All parks, trails, and facilities remain closed to the public. 

Friday, January 30, 2026

2:30 p.m. - Trash & Recycling Update (Friday Customers):

  • Waste Pro will not collect any trash & recycling on Saturday, Jan. 31. Any Friday customers who do not receive service today will not be serviced again until Friday, Feb. 6.
  • Friday customers only: Waste Pro will collect additional bags left outside of your cart during next week’s pickup to accommodate this change in service. We appreciate your patience and understanding as we work through this winter weather. 

2 p.m. - Parks, Trails, Facilities, Programs Update: 

  • All parks, trails, and facilities will be closed from 5 p.m. Friday, Jan. 30 to 8 a.m. Monday, Feb. 2. Additional closures may be possible on Monday based on conditions. Updates will be provided. 
  • Programs and rentals at the Rec Barn have been canceled for Monday, Feb. 2. Tuesday's participants and rentals have been notified to be on standby. 

9:30 a.m. - Trash & Recycling Update: 

  • Due to last weekend’s ice storm, trash and recycling service has been operating on a one-day delay this week. Today (Friday), crews are completing Thursday’s routes.
  • If you are a Friday customer (Millbridge neighborhood), please place your carts at the curb today if you are able.
  • Once Thursday customers are finished, Waste Pro will begin working on Friday routes. Crews may not be able to complete all Friday collections today, but they will make every effort to service as many homes as possible. Any remaining Friday collections are expected to be completed Saturday, weather permitting.
  • With additional winter weather moving into the area, further schedule changes are possible depending on conditions. We will provide updates as we learn more. 

9 a.m. - WINTER STORM WARNING in effect from Friday, Jan. 30, 4 p.m. until Sunday, Feb. 1, 7 a.m. Heavy snow expected. Total snow accumulations between 4 and 7 inches. Winds gusting as high as 30 mph. via National Weather Service

Thursday, January 29, 2026

12:30 p.m. - EXTREME COLD WATCH in effect from Saturday, Jan. 31, 7 p.m. until Sunday, Feb. 1, 10 a.m. The dangerously cold wind chills as low as 5 below zero could result in hypothermia or frostbite if precautions are not taken. via National Weather Service

9:15 a.m. - WINTER STORM WATCH issued for Union County in effect from Friday, Jan. 30, 4 p.m. until Sunday, Feb. 1, 7 a.m. Heavy snow possible. Total snow accumulations between 2 and 7 inches possible. Winds could gust as high as 45 mph. via National Weather Service

 


 

Monday, January 26, 2026

2:30 p.m. - Trash & Recycling Update:

  • Trash and Recycling service will operate on a one-day delay this week (Monday will be picked up Tuesday, and so on). 
  • On Tuesday, Waste Pro will begin collections on a two-hour delay due to winter weather conditions.

12:45 p.m. Town Operations Update:

  • The Town of Waxhaw's administrative offices will open on a delay at 1 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 27, due to the winter weather conditions.
  • All parks and trails remain closed to the public Tuesday.
  • The Board of Commissioners Work Session scheduled for 6:30 p.m. will go on as scheduled in-person in the Board Chambers at Town Hall.
  • An update on Trash and Recycling service is expected later today. 
Cold Weather Advisory
  • The National Weather Service has issued a Cold Weather Advisory for our area in effect from 6 p.m. Monday evening to 12 p.m. Tuesday. Very cold wind chills in the lower digits expected which could result in hypothermia if precautions are not taken.
  • Use caution when traveling outside. Wear appropriate clothing, a hat, and gloves. Make frequent checks on older family, friends, and neighbors. 
Road Conditions
  • Road conditions on major thoroughfares have improved today with much of the ice melting. Secondary roads still pose a danger and may have slick spots.
  • Road conditions are expected to worsen overnight with sub-freezing temperatures. Black ice is a concern in the morning. Drivers should slow down and use caution if traveling in the morning. 

 

Sunday, January 25, 2026

5:20 p.m. - All Town of Waxhaw offices and facilities will be closed Monday, January 26, 2026, due to the winter storm. All parks, trails, and facilities remain closed to the public. Trash and recycling service will not run Monday, Jan. 26. Freezing rain and sleet is expected this evening. Prepare for power outages now. Delay unnecessary travel.  

4:30 p.m. - Trash and Recycling service will not run on Monday, Jan. 26. Waste Pro is expected to provide a service update Monday afternoon.  

2:45 p.m. - The Waxhaw ABC Board meeting scheduled for Monday, Jan. 26 is canceled.  

12 p.m. - Union County Public Schools and Union County Government offices are closed Monday, Jan. 26, 2026.  

10:45 a.m. - The Winter Storm is here. Road conditions are icy and slick. Avoid travel on roadways if possible. Beware of refreezing tonight into Monday morning with the potential for black ice. 

Saturday, January 24, 2026

6 p.m. - Union County officials are opening a shelter in coordination with the American Red Cross to provide a warm, safe place for anyone in need at Monroe Middle School (601 E. Sunset Drive).  More information...

11 a.m. - All parks, trails and Parks and Recreation facilities are closed until further notice. Programs and rentals scheduled for Monday, Jan. 26 are canceled. A decision about Tuesday's rentals and programs will be announced Monday morning. 

Friday, January 23, 2026

4:45 p.m.Trash & Recycling Update: Currently, collection services remain on schedule. The management team at Waste Pro is closely monitoring potential inclement weather and following guidance from local emergency management. A service update is expected Sunday evening.  

12:15 p.m. -  Town of Waxhaw Declares a State of Emergency due to the threat of severe winter weather. Read the proclamation...

10:30 a.m. - ICE STORM WARNING IN EFFECT FROM 1 PM SATURDAY TO 1 PM MONDAY via National Weather Service

8:45 a.m. - All parks, trails and Parks and Recreation facilities will be closed starting at 11 a.m. Saturday. Programs and rentals scheduled for Monday, Jan. 26 are canceled. A decision about Tuesday's rentals and programs will be announced Monday morning. 

 


 

Wednesday, January 21, 2026 

Roads & Thoroughfares

  • Our main thoroughfares, NC-75, NC-16, and Waxhaw-Marvin Road are maintained by NCDOT. Residents should check real-time road conditions at DriveNC.gov.

Public Services Operations

  • Our Public Services team will pre-treat and spread salt on sidewalks around Downtown Waxhaw, the Police Department, and Town Hall.
  • Public Services crews will be on call throughout the storm to respond to urgent issues.

Parks, Trails, and Programs

  • Parks and Trails may close as conditions warrant to keep visitors safe. We do not have exact closure times yet, but updates will be posted as soon as they are available.
  • Due to the forecasted storm, all programs and rentals scheduled for this weekend are canceled.
  • Programs and rentals scheduled for next week may be canceled depending on the storm impact. Regular updates will be provided.

4:00 p.m. - Governor Josh Stein declared a State of Emergency ahead of the winter storm. 

1:00 p.m. - The National Weather Service issued a Winter Storm Watch for our area until January 26 at 1:00 p.m.
