Union County Water Project
Downtown Waxhaw is undergoing major infrastructure upgrades that will strengthen the public water and sewer systems and support long-term commercial growth.
Union County Water is coordinating with the Town of Waxhaw on this important project.
While construction will temporarily impact traffic and access in some areas, downtown businesses remain open and accessible throughout the project.
This page serves as the Town source for project updates, construction schedules, traffic impacts, and frequently asked questions.
Project Details
Phase 1 - Water Main Replacement
Union County Water began a water main replacement project in the downtown Waxhaw area on Monday, Sept. 29, 2025.
The project consists of replacing approximately 8,000 linear feet of 2-inch, 6-inch, 8-inch, and 12-inch cast-iron water mains that were installed in the 1930s.
The project contractor is Dawn Development Company.
Work started on the south side of downtown and is expected to move to the north side of downtown in Spring 2026.
Union County Water anticipates the water project will be completed by October 2026.
Phase 2 - Sewer Construction
Union County Water will soon begin replacement and construction of sewer lines. Construction is expected to start Spring to early Summer 2026 and last approximately 10 months.
This phase will replace approximately 4,000 feet of existing sewer lines in the downtown area. The work will improve system reliability, increase capacity, and support future growth in Waxhaw.
Construction methods will include both trenchless pipe replacement and traditional excavation, depending on the location and condition of the existing sewer line.
What This Means For The Community
Residents and businesses may see:
- Temporary traffic control measures
- Construction equipment in roadways
- Occasional lane shifts or short-term closures
- Restoration of pavement and surfaces after work is completed
Most sewer line replacements will occur within existing underground alignments, which helps reduce surface disruption compared to installing entirely new lines.
More detailed schedules will be shared on this page once construction timelines are finalized.
Parking & Access
Downtown remains open during construction. Visitors can continue to access downtown businesses using public parking lots and side streets.
